Peter Thomas

Peter A. Thomas passed away on September 8, 2016 after 92 wonderful years of a life filled with family, friends and a town that he loved and that loved him. He died peacefully in his home on Front Street where his family had lived since 1937.

Pete was born on August 2, 1924 and was the son of Escie and Catherine Thomas. He is survived by his sister Christine Thomas of Georgetown and by his loving nieces and nephews: Sandra Cornelius (Jim), Mary Louise Kenny (John), Tina Hatchell (Jim), Al Joseph (Lauren), Rhose Ann Khoury (Michael), Jeanine Khoury, Norma Khoury Becker (Jamie), Cathy Raad (Paul), Cindy Touma, and Leon Khoury (Laura); and his close friend of many years, Ann Howard. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Louise Thomas Joseph of Georgetown, SC and Margaret Rose Khoury of Columbia, SC.

Pete lived in Georgetown all of his life. He never married, but his hand and heart were sought by many. Pete was best known for his many years running Thomas Café, owned by the Thomas family for 56 years. He was a life-long member of St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church. He was a founding member of Knights of Columbus Council 3067, and at his death was its oldest living member. Pete proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in both the European and Pacific Theatres. Upon returning home from the war, Pete worked at Thomas Café until he and his mother sold the business in 1985. It remains today the longest continuously operating restaurant of the same name in the State of South Carolina. During those years, once breakfast and lunch were finished and the café closed for the day, Pete took up his passion for coaching Georgetown's Girls' Softball team. He had many championship teams but winning the Stuckey Invitational Softball Championship twice in a row was one of his fondest memories. Longtime teammates, Diane Rowe, Sybil Johnson, Charlene Freeman, Zulean Ray, Ann Howard and many others led Pete's team to their second championship victory in 1967, more winning seasons and lifelong friendships.

Once retired, Pete could be found in the early afternoon "having coffee and sharing stories" with his many veteran buddies. Earlier "the gang" met for coffee in the back of WalMart and more recently at Hardees. Ah, to have been an invitee to that table and the history that was relived and the yarns they shared. He was a diehard Clemson football and Dodgers baseball fan.

There will be a Blessing of the Remains at St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church on 317 Broad Street in Georgetown at 11:00 am on Friday, September 16, 2016. The family will greet friends following the service in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the St. Mary's Building Fund or Tara Hall Home for Boys.

Corinne Cummings

Corinne Ann Cummings, age 72, of Garden City, passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2016 at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Corinne was born on August 21, 1944 in Detroit, MI to Everett Culling and Violet (Landgraff) Culling who preceded her in death.

In 1974, she moved to TN with her husband and children. Then in 1989 moved to SC. Though she remained a Northerner at heart, she never again lived above the Mason-Dixon line.

Corinne was dearly and deeply loved by her children to whom she gave the most important things in life: unconditional love, laughter and support. Those things, along with the example of her strength and perseverance, made them strong and grew in them the unbreakable bond that will carry them forward together.

Corinne loved words, whether reading, crosswords or conversation; animals; diy projects, both building and tearing down; unique art and learning new things daily.

Her granddaughter, Kaysie, wrote a remembrance of her that was so apt that I would like to include it here:

In the early hours of the morning my family lost an incredibly special

woman. I've never known anyone like my grandma. I've never known

a human being that could eat so many chocolate chip cookies in one

sitting. I've never met someone who adored Christmas as much as she

did. She was so unique and stubborn, so wonderfully hardheaded. She

loved her family more than anything and hated anything conventional.

One of the last times I saw her, I had purple hair, and she told me, "Oh

thank God you're still not normal"! She loved quirky. She loved fun. And

she loved to speak her mind whether you wanted to hear it or not. If

you got the chance to meet her, count yourself lucky. And if you never

got to, I'm sorry that I didn't introduce the two of you...She was one of

the toughest ladies I've ever met, and one day everyone in our family

will meet her again. I know she's up there drinking coffee and looking

at Christmas decorations and she couldn't be happier.

Corinne was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charles and Sara Landgraff; paternal grandparents, Amel and Anna Culling; maternal uncle, Louis Landgraff, his wife Norma, Louis' sister, Lily, who died in childhood and their daughter, Ruth; brother, David Culling and his wife, Pat; brother-in-law, Phillip Lowe and her nephew, Mark Giuliani.

She is loved and survived by her sister, Elaine Lowe; children, Diane Cummings, Darcy Butler, James Cummings and his wife, Hannah; the Landgraff cousins: Michael, Tim, Esther, David, Dan, Connie and Elizabeth; nephews: Michael, Stephen, Scott, Jeffery; niece: Kathy; grandchildren: Ashley, Kristin, Kaysie, Inde, Lilly, Nicky; great grandchildren: Ian, Sophia, Amberle and more on the way!

A private memorial service will be held.
